ULTRAFILTERATION SYSTEM About

An Ultrafiltration (UF) system is a membrane-based water treatment process used to remove suspended solids, colloids, bacteria, viruses, and high-molecular-weight organic substances from water. UF operates using a semi-permeable membrane with very small pores, typically in the range of 0.010.1 microns.

Working Principle

Feed water is pumped through UF membrane modules under pressure. The membrane allows water and dissolved low-molecular-weight substances to pass through as permeate, while larger particles and microorganisms are retained as reject/concentrate.

The retained contaminants are periodically removed through backwashing and/or chemically enhanced backwashing (CEB) to maintain membrane performance.

Main Components

  1. Feed Tank Stores and equalizes the incoming water.
  2. Feed Pump Supplies the required pressure and flow to the UF membranes.
  3. Pre-filter Removes larger particles and protects the membranes.
  4. UF Membrane Modules The primary filtration element, commonly hollow-fiber or tubular membranes.
  5. Permeate Tank Collects the filtered water.
  6. Backwash System Uses permeate water to clean the membrane periodically.
  7. Chemical Cleaning System Uses suitable chemicals when physical cleaning is insufficient.
  8. Control Panel/PLC Automatically controls filtration, backwash, CEB, alarms, and operating parameters.
  9. Pressure and Flow Instruments Monitor feed pressure, permeate pressure, flow rate, and membrane performance.
